HOW DOES CO2 EXTRACTION WORK FOR CBD?

co2 extraction work for CBD

There are different ways of extracting CBD oils from the raw hemp material. Some low-end companies practice crude extraction methods that employ chemical solvents like hexane and butane which can jeopardize the molecular structure of the CBD if done inaccurately, and more importantly. It can produce an end product that includes harsh chemical residues — not stuff that you desire to be ingesting as a byproduct.

If you’re looking for the absolute, purest, and most effective tincture plausible – CO2 extraction is the perfect way to go. In this article, we will explain what CO2 extraction is and why is it preferred over other methods when preparing raw hemp material into CBD oil?

WHY SUPERCRITICAL CO2 IS HARMLESS AND MORE USEFUL THAN OTHER EXTRACTION METHODS

CO2 extraction is safe, pure, and natural. CO2 is a 100% natural composite found all around us. It’s in the air we inhale, in the fizzy beverages we sip, and in the boxes of fresh foods that we purchase at the grocery store. The FDA has recognized it as a safe material for industrial extraction since the 1980s.

It has unparalleled “supercritical” properties. If you know basic chemistry, you’ll agree that most compounds exist in one of three natural categories: gas, liquid, or solid. When supported by precise blends of temperature and pressure, however, a few select compounds (such as CO2) are endowed to subsist in a “supercritical” phase between liquid and gas. When in this state, CO2 is adequate to separate, active hemp compounds (like CBD) in nearly a 100% effective manner.

In average concentrations, it is inert, non-toxic, non-combustible, and non-harmful to humans. Chemical catalysts like propane and butane are incredibly volatile. Researchers in Oregon have affirmed that butane cannabis extractions can release benzene – a recognized carcinogen – when exposed to extreme temperatures. CO2, on the other hand, is non-toxic to humans, and non-combustible. It is sustainable.

CO2 extraction is a considerable advantage, especially for the environmentally conscious. Solvents like Propane and Butane are petroleum-based and are harmful to the environment, CO2 is a 100% natural and sustainable compound. Solvent-based CBD oils need to be treated many times over to exclude residual chemical compounds. And even still, it is impossible to purify them completely. CO2, on the other hand, is easily segregated from CBD by evaporation when kept at a precise temperature and pressure.

HOW DOES CO2 EXTRACTION WORK?

First, raw plant matter containing the CBD is loaded into a large canister. Next, CO2 gas is condensed and cooled (in a separate canister) to an extremely low temperature (about -70℉) to condense it from a gaseous phase to a liquid phase. Once in this liquid phase, the CO2 is reheated slightly (typically to temperatures no higher than 120℉), to enable it to enter a “supercritical” state where neither gas nor liquid properties are prevailing.

During this pressurized, supercritical phase, the CO2 is then “injected” into the canister holding the raw hemp, at which juncture it “flows” over the plant material to “obtain” the active compounds. When all of the active hemp compounds are collected, the supercritical CO2 (sc-CO2) goes to another canister. Where the CBD separates resulting in a clear, viscous, CBD-rich fluid to drip out into a collection jar, after which it goes for further purification.

Finally, the sc-CO2 which separates from the plant material is decompressed or recycled to allow it to return to its natural gaseous state, where the cycle repeats.

WHY DOESN’T EVERY COMPANY USE CO2 EXTRACTION?

In a word, if you’re questioning why every CBD oil company doesn’t engage a supercritical CO2 extraction process, it is because it can be incredibly expensive. Petroleum-based solvent extraction is infinitely cheaper; however, the resultant product is low in quality and is far less effective – and potentially dangerous to consume.Companies who invest in CO2 extraction equipment dedicate to manufacturing only the purest, safest, and highest-quality CBD oils — guaranteed.
